Welding
See course details, dates, costs, tutors & stories from students below
On these welding taster days with Rob Hill, you will learn the basic principles of mig-welding and how to make a clean, strong and practical weld. With opportunity to use a plasma cutter, you will learn how to cut, bend and grind your steel, making a practical and finished object with decorative details such as scrolled legs or patterns cut with plasma.
Having focused on a welding exercise at the beginning of the day, your main project will be to make a plant support or rose climber, a wellie rack, jack and scraper, or a fire-pit depending on which day you choose. All options will result in practical items that you can enjoy using every day, a fire pit being the perfect project to learn how to re-use old materials such as a wheel rim. For those who would like something a little more ambitious, you could make a weathervane over two days.
If you are not able to join us on our fixed dates below, Rob is offering bespoke days in 2025, either as 1:1 tuition or for your own group.

Rob Hill is one of the founders of Wernog Wood and
has single handedly built the workshops, the cosy Red Shed, the stunning ash bed within it and almost every other structure you will see when you get here. We highly recommend you book your course nights in the Red Shed to try out the comfy bed he made especially for this woodland cabin..
Trained as a mechanic, Rob spent many years running his own workshop, repairing vehicles and fabricating metal structures.
Rob is fascinated by how things work and how they are made. He is the king of turning one thing into another using old materials to create something functional and new. He loves the challenge of creating the unusual and Wernog Wood is the perfect opportunity to renovate old buildings and to build quirky new structures.
Stories from our students
I've just completed a 1 day intro to welding, something I've wanted to do for ages and have spent hours trying to find a course, without success. I was introduced to Wernog via a FB advert and delighted I took the opportunity. There were 4 of us on the course, we learned the basics, used tools and equipment which I'd never used before and learned a huge amount in a lovely setting with great company. I'd definitely do more with Wernog in the future, Check them out and do something for yourself. Soon. - Robin
I learned so much and came away with just what I wanted - Ken
An excellent course on how to weld. Great instruction and guidance from Rob. The welcome was warm, food and conversation was very good. - Graham
The introductory welding course was first rate. It is truly hands-on, and at the end of the day we all went home with the fruit of our labours - a fire pit that now takes pride of place in the garden. I just hope they offer a refresher or even better intermediate course one day.
This is my second course at Wernog Wood. Making stuff with other people to share the experience is wonderful.
The teaching is excellent and I tell anyone who will listen about what a gem this is. Claire was brilliant and helpful when I turned up a day early (my fault) for a course......Rob got me welding anyway and I got some one-to-one help....so flexible! My wife loves Wernog Wood too and is taking the Automata Making course soon.... you can't beat the stimulating change of scene this place gives. - Kevin
